01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

In the Umaji neighborhood of Kameoka, Kyoto, the sweet to seek out first at Asahido is the Tanba Dainagon Monaka, made using azuki beans rooted in the local terroir. Simmered patiently to draw out the nuanced character of Umaji Dainagon azuki, the sweet bean paste is crafted with an elegant sweetness and contains no added salt. It melts away lightly on the palate, framed by crisp, fragrant wafers made with 100 percent domestic glutinous rice. Shaped gracefully like a chrysanthemum blossom, the confection is prized both to accompany green tea and as a thoughtful gift.

Standing alongside these traditional confections is another specialty that has earned a devoted following: an extra-tall soft-serve ice cream. Piled exceptionally high, the substantial cone often draws an audible reaction the moment it is handed across the counter. Drivers and motorcyclists frequently pull in for a casual refresh along their route. On warm days, eating briskly before it melts is part of the shop's charm, offering a simple, deeply satisfying cold treat.

The showcase displays unfussy, enduring confections such as mame daifuku, where the saltiness of red peas complements the rich azuki, and Sao-bune, a fragrant baked manju filled with smooth strained red bean paste, inspired by traditional river punting down the Hozu River. The changing seasons bring their own sweets: kuri daifuku with chestnut in autumn and winter, strawberry daifuku from winter into spring, and a bright lemon cake studded with candied lemon peel.

With retro dagashi penny candies lining the shelves and warm hospitality, this unpretentious spot invites a casual detour for an everyday sweet. Free customer parking is provided, and payment is cash only.
